School Readiness Assessments

Is your child ready to start school? Deciding when to start your child at school is one of the most important educational decisions you will make on behalf of your child. Research shows us that a certain level of social and emotional maturity, combined with knowledge of some basic academic principles and concepts, will give your child a solid start to their education and the best opportunity for success at school. A school readiness assessment will include:

  • An initial consultation (30 minutes) with parents to establish child and family history, and to address any questions or  areas of concern
  • Child Assessment Session #1 – Standardised psychometric assessment of social/emotional skills and development
  • Child Assessment Session #2 – Assessment of pre-literacy and pre-numeracy knowledge and understandings
  • Observation session at your child’s early learning centre and discussion with early childhood educator (if requested)
  • Feedback and reporting session with parents (45 minutes), including detailed written report

Independent Academic Assessments & Development of Personal Learning Goals/Plans

Are you concerned about your child’s literacy development? At Bloom, we can assess your child’s level of knowledge and understanding in the areas of phonics and phonemic awareness (knowledge of letters and sounds, ability to hear sounds in words), reading (word knowledge, decoding strategies, comprehension), writing (word building, sentence structure) and spelling.

After testing is completed, parents are offered a debriefing and feedback session during which you are provided with a comprehensive report detailing your child’s progress. At your request, these findings can be used to inform the development of Personal Learning Goals, or a more comprehensive Personal Learning Plan, either independently or in collaboration with your child’s classroom teacher.

Targeted Literacy Instruction & Reading Intervention Program

The skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing will have a major impact on your child’s success at school, and in life. If you are concerned about your child’s progress in any of these areas, we can help! One-on-one or small group tuition can support your child’s learning and ensure that their personal learning needs are determined and met in every session.

Many children in schools today are in need of more intensive support in reading, however some just miss out on eligibility for support programs such as Reading Recovery. At Bloom, we can design a Reading Intervention Program specifically to target your child’s needs.
